Sugar and Core Challenge
How long: 21 days
When: Nov 1 – Nov 21
Where: Wherever you are – at home, at work, in the mall, at the airport, at your friend’s house, or in the park.
Why 21 days: It takes 21 days to bust a habit
Why Now: Before we get into the holidays is a good time to cleanse and prime our bodies so that we make clear choices at the wonderful festivities this time of year brings!
Why Sugar and Core together: Both require intention, discipline and sharpening of will power. Most will likely find either the core or the sugar challenge to be easier over the other, the one that is most difficult for you to stick to, is the one that is needed the most. Will power is like a muscle that needs to be exercised in order to work.Cost: 1 class card or $10 (depending on your program and where you are)
How it works:
Sugar
No refined sugars (desserts, muffins, coffee cake, candy, most chocolate, café drinks with sugar, fruit juices with added sugar) for only 21 days. (I would like to include alcohol since it just converts to sugar, but so do carbs, and then we’re getting into the Wellness Challenge. Go ahead & drink your wine. J)
**Note: I will be posting healthy, no sugar, dessert ideas throughout the challenge!
Core
Week 1: Core work 50 breaths, 7 times per week
Week 2: Core work 75 breaths, 7 times per week
Week 3: Core work 100 breaths, 7 times per week
**1 breath = inhale/exhale. There is no core work too easy or too hard, you will adjust it to YOUR strength and situation. I will offer ideas only!
Challenge to win – I’m changing this up! If you post all 21 days, and have no cheats or core skips, you will earn 3 free classes! (if you’re not a Miko Yoga student, you will earn your $10 back!)
Quick Summary:
– Earn 1 point for every post regarding challenge – post right here, on this page @ realgreendaily.com
– 7 points = 1 free class; (earn as many as 3 free classes)
– Lose 1 point for each cheat or skip
Long Summary:
It’s important that you use the blogsite www.realgreendaily.com to post – this creates accountability. Trust me, you will think twice about having a piece of chocolate, or skipping your core work, if you know you’re going to have to fess up on the blog to everyone!
For every post you make stating how you resisted a sweet, ate a sweet, did your core work and how you feel about it, sat on the couch and ate potato chips and how you feel about that, you will earn 1 point. 7 full points = 1 free class. This means, if you post all 21 days, and have no cheats or core skips, you will earn 3 free classes! For each cheat you have, you will lose 1 point. In the spirit of authenticity, please be honest, you will only be cheating yourself in more ways than one if you’re not!

As I practiced yoga this morning, I realized that I am REALLY looking forward to cleansing myself of desserts this next 21 days! So, I’ve wrapped this thought into a little pretty present, and will be giving it to myself everytime I’m feeling tempted by a dessert later on. This is such a wonderful gift to be giving outselves.
My core work today:
Plank hold
Ardho Navasana – Navasana series (Boat pose to half boat pose x 15)
Chatta hold
Ardho Navasana hold and dance party in this pose (wiggle with small of back still on mat)

Why did Day 1 just had to be the day the Gingerbread Lattes arrive at Starbucks! Ahhh!!!! And I was in a tense meeting this morning where someone went and got a bowl of chocolate to try and calm everyone down. I’m still holding strong, though! Here’s to an easier Day 2!

Oops. Sorry about the grammatical faux pas above. I’m not in my right mind;)
November 1, 2012 at 8:12 pm
timariemiko
I didn’t notice your faux pas. 🙂 I can relate to the Starbucks craving. I am in Seattle, and there are coffee houses everywhere. I would like to have a SOMETHING because it just sounds good and cozy. Maybe we can come up with something to substitute? Steamed milk, gingerbread seasoning of some kind, stevia, vanilla extract maybe and espresso…I bet we can make this at home!

So far the hardest part has been coming home from work, that tends to be my snacking time. I was good though and went for the raisins. 🙂 It’s amazing how many food items have sugar added to them! I did my core exercises and I can’t believe how weak my core is! I was feeling these.
November 1, 2012 at 8:09 pm
timariemiko
Ooo, I’m glad the core exercises were tough! This is going to be a great practice for you, and you’ll probably discover shifts in strength in yoga postures, and possibly your running! Yay!

One day down, 20 to go! Had to take all my sugary treats from Halloween into work today to avoid temptation at home. Went to the grocery store after work and found that sugar is added to SO many things that do not even need it! but i found an acceptable snack for a baby shower party tomorrow. At least there will be one thing there I can have! Did my core exercises after putting the kiddos to bed: 5 sets of 10 reps bicycle crunches…I made it!! Time for bed:-)

I didn’t think I was sore from doing the core work yesterday until I did it today! Wow, I’m a wimp!

Kay, if it makes you feel better, I am sore too! You will be okay to continue your core work even when you’re sore, it will actually help!

Besides my cough drops, I have been able to stay away from sugar. Not easy when people keep bringing in goodies to work. Does anyone know of sugar free cough drops that are not made with synthetic sweeteners??? Kay, I could feel it during my core exercises too! That’s good, it means we are working. 🙂

Riki – did you try Whole Foods or Sprouts? There has got to be something there…it’s probably sweetened with Stevia.

I’m going to try this weekend to search Whole Foods and Sprouts. It would be easier if those stores were closer. 🙂

I just realized I posted on the wrong page! You guys posted a ton in two days – I’m behind! Today is day two with no sugar, and yeah, a ton of things have added sugar. The core work is awesome. The kids try to do it with me. 🙂

Core exercises complete!Stayed away from sugar today even though it was everywhere at work! I need to look for something else besides oatmeal for breakfast…will be in the lookout for sugar free cereal (if it exists!!)
November 2, 2012 at 11:05 pm
timariemiko
How about a smoothie? Or eggs? Cereals are tough. A good “oatmeal” that is pretty yummy is Quinoa warmed up with apples, dried fruit and cinnamon. You can add a few drops of stevia too, and it’s delicious. I really like to have mine with a little plain yogurt too.

Riki – I looked at my Xylitol and it has no indication whether it is extracted from wood or corn. How are you able to tell!?
My core work today – we did in class this morning.
I ate a larabar because I was craving a sweet! I want to go to Starbucks to get a steamer…but the thought of just hot milk is not very tempting. Maybe I should bring my own flavoring with me!?
November 3, 2012 at 8:35 pm
Riki Kurbansade
Ok, on the back of my bag of Xylitol, there is a description under where it says “Sweetening for over 100 years!” and it states that it is derived from 100% North American hardwood. On the other bag it was in that area too. Hope this helps. 🙂
November 3, 2012 at 11:06 pm
timariemiko
I will look!
November 3, 2012 at 7:16 pm
Riki Kurbansade
Timarie,
Which brand of Xylitol do you have? Mine is Emerald Forest, but both brands at Whole Foods in Plano had what they were from, the other brand was derived from corn.
I too did my core workout in class today! 🙂 I have been able to stay away from sugar and have bought the ingredients to make the Raw Apple Cobbler. Can’t wait.
November 3, 2012 at 11:16 pm
timariemiko
My Xylitol is Xylo Sweet – I also got it at Whole Foods. It says that its made from the fibrous parts of plants…but that’s so vague! Oh well, I’d rather remain ignorant, finish this bag and watch out for corn on the next one!

I found shredded wheat cereal without sugar at sprouts today and will have it with my fruit. Also found waffles sweetened only with fruit juices!
Core exercise in class today. Made the raw apple cobbler for my family after dinner. OH MY! It was so good I licked the plate:) what a nice sweet healthy treat!

One more successful day! Tonight we went to the Starbucks at Knox-Henderson and had coffee made in the Clover. It’s so good that it totally filled my chocolate craving–straight up with no sugar or anything. There’s something about that machine that gives it a quality that makes you think you’re drinking chocolate. It’s pricey, but….ahhhh.
And thanks for a great class this morning, Timarie!

I followed your lead Timarie and had a larabar this afternoon. I would have preferred a kitkat, but at least I wasn’t hungry. Still need to do core but am currently feeding the baby and know I won’t post later but promise to get my core exercises in!

Hey Everyone – Amanda just asked me a good question about Brown Rice Syrup because the new Lara Bar “Uber” has it in there. Brown Rice Syrup is very similar to High Fructose Corn Syrup in its function and purpose in life. Brown Rice sounds healthy, and we can pretend we didn’t read the syrup part…but the Glycemic Index of Brown Rice Syrup is higher than table sugar, so stay away!
Another thing – back when Karen and I did our Raw Food Cleanses, I noticed that I wasn’t craving sugar AT ALL, but was craving bread and carbs instead. (That was rare for me.) I finally have a reason for this….breads and pastas have a very high glycemic index, somtimes higher than sweets. Breads made from special grains and seeds do not. Anyway, not saying you need to cut out bread or carbs for this, but this is just something interesting to observe about your habits and your body during this sugar detox!

Riki Kurbansade
Did my core today with my dogs trying to push me out of plank and side planks, lol. Stayed away from sugar today and my cough drop need has decreased, so that is a plus too. Glad to know about the brown rice syrup, I have a jar of it here and the new cough drops I found has that in them too. The brand of breads that I like are the ‘Food For Life”, which are made from sprouted organic grains with no added sweeteners, not even in their raisin bread. 🙂

I really didn’t realize how sore my core was from yesterdays class until I tried my exer today! Had to rest more between the sets 🙂

Completed my core exercises at class tonight and avoided sugar once again. I have to find a way to get my mind/body away from the thought that when I get home that is snack time. This continues to be the hardest time for me for resistance, however I am still resisting the sugar.

Core exercises completed, which were extra tough today. I think it’s catching up and I’m also sore from last nights class. 🙂 Sugar free again today, however I had a scare after I took a couple of bites of some applesauce, then I looked at the container, thank goodness I bought natural, had no sugar added. Hope everyone is doing well! 🙂

Riki – you can do easier core exercises instead, to give yourself a break – regular crunches or spinal strength or modified side plank.

I’m loving doing the core work first thing in the morning! Being sugar free was tough today. Work was stressful and apparently sugar is my go-to comfort food. Still resisting so far.
November 6, 2012 at 11:07 pm
timariemiko
Kay, you can do this. When you get stressed, the last thing your body needs is more stress from a sugar spike. That’s just more anxiety and short and fast patterns. If you’re not bringing fruit with you to work, try that. And your tea!

Kay
You are such an encourager!!! Thank you!

Hey all! I am also loving the core workouts 🙂 I just may have to continue after this is over so i can maintain strength there. Resisted sugar today and was liking my sugar free macroons as a snack. They taste better than the ones with the bad sugar in them!

I am still loving giving myself the gift of no refined sugar. It feels so good not to fall back on my old habits of giving into my anxious behavior. (I know you all don’t think I do this, but I do! This is why I practice yoga, and why I need these cleanses to re-commit to my intention and to remind myself the importance of listening to my body.) I did my core work this morning. Love that core work in the morning too!!!

I’ll have to get that tea and make some of the recipes. I’m really missing my sugar and not loving that so much! Maybe by the end I’ll feel that way. I am proud of myself for not giving in today, I was really craving a sugary snack. I’m taking it one day at a time.

I did my core work this morning and felt awesome. And then……..another really stressful day at work, and I was on the verge of caving and drinking a Coke. And I never even drink Coke!! Why am I craving it now?!? I was digging for change and had about decided to give in when I read Timarie’s comment on my post yesterday. It was a close one, but I resisted!
Thanks everyone for all the posts! I really thought the core challenge was going to be harder than the sugar; boy was I wrong!

November 7, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Oh! I have it. I have a scoby too. You don’t need to buy a starter kit. I can give you one of mine…unless you really want the starter kit!
November 8, 2012 at 5:44 pm
Riki Kurbansade
I guess you need a scoby to make the tea? I know I’ve read that you have to be careful when doing that so that it doesn’t go bad. I would like to try the recipe. I’ve only drank the Kombucha tea by Synergy and always get a flavored one, so I have no idea what just regular Kombucha tea tastes like.

Joining the fray. Had stressful last week that emphasized staying OFF the computer at home if at all possible. That said, I’ve been doing well without sugar. Today I had two bites of Erich’s frozen yogurt, and it was soooo sweet.
I made myself a banana milkshake to satisfy a craving. It was just a banana, milk, stevia, and some vanilla extract, but it was AWESOME!
November 8, 2012 at 7:13 pm
Riki Kurbansade
Ok, so this week is definitely tougher for the core exercises, and I need to learn to close the door so I’m not fighting my dogs off of me while trying to do my exercises. That should earn me some extra credit, lol. I have also stayed away from sugar. My craving for chocolate is starting to hit, so I made this wonderful recipe to curb that craving. I will try to post it to share. 🙂

Riki Kurbansade
This recipe is from my copy of “The Kind Diet” by Alicia Silverstone:
Raw Balls
1/2 cup walnuts
1/2 cup pitted dates
1/2 cup raw carob powder (I use cocoa powder)
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup almond butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp fine sea salt
1/2 cup whole raw almonds
2 cups shredded unsweetened coconut
Place walnuts in food processor and process until coarsely ground. Add the dates and pulse until well combined with the nuts. Add carob powder, syrup, almond butter, vanilla, and salt. Process until the mixture is thick and smooth. Add the almonds and pulse a few time till combined but remain in crunchy chunks.
Roll into golf ball size balls and roll in coconut. Place in sealed container and place in freezer till hardened.
(I actually mix in my coconut when the rest of the mixture gets mixed together. Of course you can use this recipe as a base and change it up as you like. I love this recipe.)
Enjoy!

Today I was tempted every time I turned a corner… I took the day off to get things done around the house. When I was out, Costco was sampling dark chocolate dried berries, the Starbucks in Tom Thomb was sampling some new latte they have with caramel. It was really hard to walk away, but I felt good for doing just that. I went to lunch with Rick and ordered an Horachatta. Whew! Do they soak that rice milk with sugar! I didn’t realize until after I ordered it. I drank it. So, I think this should count against me.
I did a tough yoga class this morning, lots of abs.

If you like Coconut and haven’t checked out the Macaroon Recipe on this site, here it is:
Another thing I do to make “pudding” if I’m craving chocolate… I take a scoop or two of plain greek yogurt, put a few drops of vanilla extract, stevia and as much 100% dark cocoa powder as I want. I also will add frozen berries sometimes too, or unsweetened coconut, or mint (leaves and extract.) Somtimes I find that Whole Foods has 100% Cocoa chips in their bulk spice section, and I sprinkle those in when I have them. There are all kinds of variations to this, and they are all good and all quick and easy! (It’s good without the cocoa powder too.)

You all are doing awesome!!! Collectively, I think this is the most committed group I’ve had in a challenge. It’s so nice to have such a supportive group. You make this fun. Thank you. You ARE over half way there – only 10 days left!
I did yoga this morning, and will do a little more core work later. I am literally feeling liberated from sugar. It feels so good to genuinely say “No thank you, I don’t need sweetener in my latte.”

This weekend we went to San Antonio for our alumni weekend and the Rock and Roll marathon. It wasn’t hard to get core work in, but being around all of our college friends resulted in a number of sugar cheats. Saturday we had burgers at our favorite burger place, complete with fries and ketchup (so much sugar). At happy hour Saturday afternoon I had a black cherry margarita. Today in the half marathon I drank Gatorade and ate a energy bar (1/2). Not a good food weekend. But I did run 13.1 miles today.

Core work this morning, and no sugar again! I had the last of my pumpkin pudding. I really wanted chocolate today, but honestly knew that my body doesn’t need it. It felt good to have a clear reason to say “nope, not having it.” 🙂

Completed my core work for the day and had no sugar as well. Feeling good, even volunteered to make dessert for Thanksgiving so I can make something more healthy for us all 🙂

You all sound more positive about not eating sugar than I am! I’m just counting down the days until I can eat chocolate again, and I don’t even consider myself a big sugar person. I never add sugar to anything but I do miss my chocolate! I am amazed at how often I reach for foods unconsciously. I find myself standing in my pantry, not hungry, just wanting something. So this has been great to really focus on the fact that I don’t need to eat. But I think I say this during every cleanse or challenge that I’ve done w Timarie…
I was able to get my core work in at the gym today and will definitely try to keep that up when this is over.
Congrats on the half Amanda! I won a local 5K last weekend. I won’t mention my time or the size of the race! :).

Well, please, I am not surprised to hear that you won a race! This is not the first win for you.
Something that I’ve been noticing a lot is that I eat and munch because my mind wants me to, not because my body needs it. It’s interesting how my mind takes over. Shifting that takes a lot of work!
On a side note…I miss you! Was thinking today about walking in Denver with you, and eating at that chain noodle place you have up there. Even though we walked, and walked and walked, and I think I started to get blisters, it was so much fun!

I really missed being in class tonight!!
I skipped core yesterday thanks to being sick, but I’m back on the wagon today. And no sugar!
The real test will be this Thur-Sun when I’m in Las Vegas for work!

You guys are doing fantastic. WE ARE APPROACHING THE HOME STRETCH! Hey, I was thinking you can all have a wild card for your core work if you think you need it. (One free day of your choosing without core.)
I did a huge variety in my core work this morning, and it was a challenge! Good to mix it up. I am eating my yogurt chocolate and blueberry “pudding” right now. 🙂

No sugar today. Core complete. I wrapped up into our shows that we have on DVR and almost forget to do the core exercises. I think it’s almost harder to do them than stay away from sugar. lol

Resisted sugar today and completed my core work. I made a baked pear cobbler tonight that was delicious. Even my picky 3 year old asked for seconds! I will post the recipe later on 🙂

Core…..check
But the big news is today I worked with a group of teachers that I knew were going to be tired and cranky, so I took them chocolate covered pretzels and some other things. It did not even cross my mind to eat any!! Yay for small victories!

I have noticed that fruit is tasting sweeter to me and satisfies my craving for something sugary. I usually have the most trouble avoiding cookies and cake, but have been avoiding all the baked goods. Here is my pear cobbler recipe link:

Today has been good and I think I’m finally at a point where I can walk by sugary items and not want to grab it and think that if I don’t tell Timarie that it didn’t really happen.
I did cheat on Tuesday though and it was not worth it. I went to Starbucks w a gift card and ordered a nonfat latte. What I got had whipped cream. It was an unflavored latte, so no sugar in the drink, just the whipped cream. I could have at least attempted to take it off, but I was in the car and was too lazy to do so. Then yesterday I had one of the fage yogurts w fruit. I’m sure that had a lot of sugar as well, but I didnt even think about it at the time.
Still have to do core today but it will get done!
November 16, 2012 at 11:44 am
Timarie
Karen! Whipped Cream!? I would have at least gotten a gingerbread latte if I was going to cheat! 🙂
So, it takes 21 days to change a habit. Your cells are getting less dependent or addicted to sugar, and that’s why you’re not craving it as much. Yay!

Today I learned that, yes, you can do core work in an airport!
No sugar today:)
November 16, 2012 at 11:51 am
Timarie
That’s awesome Kay. When I go to the airport, getting ready for a flight, I start to fidget around expecting to be seated in a cramped space for so long, so I do hip openers, shoulder openers, etc… And Rick just stares at me blankly and says, “please don’t bend over and touch your toes.” 🙂 You can do a lot at the airport. You can even reach down and touch your toes, I just make sure I’m against a wall!

Here is what I’m struggling with today… It’s not so much my body/mind craving the actual sugar snack, it’s the thought of enjoying that snack as a comfort food for the holidays!
Look at the email I just got:
“There is an awesome chocolate cake on our viewing table if anyone would like a piece. This is from Leigh Ann’s family recipe. Inside hint is to heat it up for 7-10 seconds and it tastes even better.”
Not fare! The funny thing is, I know if I were to eat a bite, it wouldn’t taste as great to me as this email promises. It would make my head spin from the sugar rush.
My core work is 1/2 complete today, will do the rest tonight.

Core work, done. Wow, the jump from 75-100 has been tougher than the 50-75 jump.

I have to give a shout out to Kay… I just noticed that on Kay’s Twitter account, the words she uses to describe herself is this:
“person of tea, books, and chocolate”
This leads me to believe that Kay must really, really love to have chocolate as part of her life!
Way to go Kay – to turn your nose up at traditional chocolate for 21 days must be a big challenge. That is inspiring to me. The good news is, you can still have chocolate if you make it yourself, using 100% cocoa.
I promise to post a chocolate recipe here this weekend!

Haha! Thanks for the shout out! Core work done for today. (I’m finding that it’s really really good for my battery site!) We have a dinner meeting tonight, and I’m DETERMINED to resist the inevitable dessert temptation!

I guess I need to break the habit of snacking when I get home in the afternoon. I’m doing well without the sugar, however I am a big dark chocolate fan. The brand I buy uses beet sugar, however, that is still processed so I will try to stay away from it even after we are through with our 21 day challenge. I have made other goodies with cocoa that I can eat using alternate sweeteners, so I get my chocolate fix. Dates are great for that. 🙂 Check out these sites for some recipes that use alternate sweeteners, but not all the recipes are that way. For myself and Kay this is a great one: http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com (there is even a chocolate bar recipe!) and: http://www.thesweetlifeonline.com/category/sweets/
Enjoy and have a great weekend!
Oh yeah, core exercises complete and no sugar today! (not even at the movie theater. 😉 )

OK, girls, I have to confess that I yielded to the chocolate temptation after I posted earlier. We finished a fantastic dinner at a great restaurant, and the manager brought out complimentary mini molten chocolate cakes for the 11 of us to share. I caved. It was unbelievably good, and I only had a couple of bites, but it was definitely a cheat.

I’ve noticed a lot of talk about coconut sugar in health food recipes. So, I did a little research. It looks like coconut sugar is healthier than regular cane sugar only because it has added nutrients that cane sugar lacks. But, it is still high in calories and in general, not a healthy food.
I found this article that goes into depth about it if you want to check it out.

Thanks, I have wondered about coconut sugar. What about date sugar? Is it processed the same way?
November 19, 2012 at 9:37 pm
Timarie Mikolasek
I’m not sure about date sugar. I personally need to limit my use of even stevia because my mind likes the sweet taste. I’m not sure about using any of the alternative sugars all the time. All sugar reacts the same in the body though, even sugar from fruit. The reason fruit is better to have is only because of the fiber in the fruit that helps slow the insulin spike/sugar rush. But in the end, sugar is sugar.

In buying our groceries today, I checked to see if there was any sugar in the products that we are using for T-day. I am planning on trying to stick to no additional processed sugar in my diet if I can. Unfortunately so many products that we use have sugar added, but I’m going to say that 1gram really isn’t that much and I can still keep my processed sugar intake to a minimum.
I have completed my core workout today, even got in a short run, and stayed away from sugar. Woo hop, doing great. Thanks Timarie!

Core work done for today. Stayed away from sugar and found another cereal that I can have. I am also planning to stay away from the sugar most of the time after this is done. However I do know that I may indulge at times if it is a special occasion 🙂 Just going to be more aware of my sugar intake as a whole.

Made it through another day without sugar, which actually has not been that hard, but that may be because we have alternate sweets and sweeteners we can eat/use. Lynn and I had a discussion about different types of sugars with fellow employees today and the processing of them. Did my core exercises with the help of my ever so loving 75 and 85 pound “lap” dogs. They made me laugh through out. 🙂

Almost there! One of my coworkers waved my favorite fall treat under my nose today…pumpkin spice latte!!! I did ok though, was not tempted by it’s yumminess. In fact it motivated me to try to recreate it at home in my kitchen but as a healthier version. We will see how that goes. I would really like to recreate some of my favorite things in a healthier fashion. Like Riki said today we were discussing the different sweeteners and it would have to work using other more naturals items as sweeteners for my tried and true recipes. Ha! My grandmother would be shaking her head at me trying to tweak her recipes! Core exer done today.

Day 21! woo hoo we made it! I avoided our bake sale at my work today even though there were lots of sugary treats. I am making a pie for Thanksgiving and I am going to make it much healthier by using less sugar. It will probably taste really sweet to me even with less sugar. Core exercises completed. I am glad to have accepted this challenge since it has made me think twice about what I am eating. Hope you all have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Xoxo
